About the Fourth School of Clinical Medicine

The Fourth School of Clinical Medicine originated from the pediatrics teaching and research group of Jiangsu medical college. This group was established in the autumn of 1953, and then began to recruit five-year undergraduate students. The department of pediatrics was established in December of 1959, and had recruited three-year graduate students since 1962. Pediatrics was first authorized for master¡¯s degree-granting by the State Council in 1981, and was authorized for doctoral degree-granting in 1988. In 1994, pediatrics was awarded for provincial key discipline by Jiangsu province government. In 1999, it was also authorized for pediatric post-doctorate mobile station. In July of 1999, the department of pediatrics was abolished and then the Second School of Clinical Medicine was set up

In January of 2007, to optimize and integrate clinical education resources, and to enhance the benefit of running the school, the Fourth School of Clinical Medicine was set up on the foundation of the original Second School of Clinical Medicine. It consists of four affiliated hospitals and one institute. They are Affiliated Brain Hospital, Affiliated Nanjing Children¡¯s Hospital, Affiliated Nanjing Health Care Hospital for Women and Infants, Nanjing Medical University Eye Hospital and the Institute of Pediatrics.

There are three III-A hospitals in our school. And our disciplines are strong. Pediatrics is awarded for Jiangsu provincial key discipline. Neurology, Psychiatry and mental hygiene, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of children are awarded for school-level key disciplines. Pediatrics and Neurology are authorized for doctoral degree-granting. Mental Hygiene and Applied Psychology are authorized for master¡¯s degree-granting.

There are two research centers in Pediatrics institute . They are the child care research center and the children¡¯s kidney diseases research center. The correlation researches of child nutrition and children¡¯s kidney diseases are in the topping level of China, and have make good foundation for keeping characteristic of specialities.

There are four specialities in our school. They are Pediatrics, Mental Hygiene, Ophthalmology and Optometry, and Reproduction Medicine. In 2006, the pediatrics students¡¯ employment rate is 100%, and the promotion rate is 22.58%. The mental hygiene students¡¯ employment rate is 91.23%, and the promotion rate is 19.30%. We began to recruit students of Ophthalmology and Optometry in 2006. When these students graduate, they can be professional optometrists and doctors.And we began to recruit students of reproduction medicine in 2007. When these students gratuate, they can work in all levels of comprehensive hospitals and MCH Organs.
