The Department of English has a faculty of 10 teachers, among whom there are one professor, two associate professors, three lecturers and four assistant lecturers. All the faculty members hold either the PhD degree or the Master’s degree. Some of them did their further studies in foreign countries such as America, Canada and Japan. The teachers of the department are committed to innovative teaching and vigorous research. The latest statistics find that nearly 30 research papers and a number of books by the faculty have been published in the past 4 years.
The four-year program of the department, currently with about 137 students and leading to the Bachelor’s degree of Arts, aims at fostering students with a good grasp of basic English knowledge as well as innovative abilities. Among its variety of courses, the major ones include Basic English, Advanced English, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translating, Interpreting, English Literature, American Literature and Linguistics. Successful completion of the undergraduate program enables the students to meet different challenges in their future career. Our teaching focuses on general basic courses and basic courses of English in the first and second grades. In the third and forth grades, emphasis is laid on the students’ acquisition of professional knowledge in linguistics, literature, and culture. Our students have successfully passed the grade 4 and grade 8 national tests for English majors with very high passing rate of 90.5% and % respectively. Our students pay attention not only to the study of their professional knowledge but the cultivation of their abilities of social practice. Students are required to obtain enough credits, pass the computer test, the grade 4 test for English majors, and the thesis defense before they can be awarded the Bachelor’s degree of Arts.

Teachers in our College published nearly 40 research papers in domestic and foreign academic journals according to the statistics in recent 4 years (2003-2007). And there are also 2 projects sponsored by our University.
