One of the four departments pertaining to the College of International Studies at Nanjing Medical University,the Department of Foreign Languages for Graduate Students is currently staffed with 2 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant, all of whom hold the MA degree and one of whom is pursuing the PhD degree abroad. The department specializes in the teaching and research of English and Japanese (as an optional course) for non-major doctoral and master’s degree candidates of this university. This department is characterized by its dynamic, diligent, and devoted faculty.

To fulfill the new requirements of discipline development and meet the ever-increasing needs of medical graduate students for a better command of English, the department has been attempting to implement an in-depth reform in its teaching modes as well as pedagogical content. While maintaining its traditional strengths in teaching general English, the department has more recently designed new English courses for academic purposes. Chief among the courses offered in the 1-semester program to doctoral students and the 2-semester program to master’s degree candidates are Advanced English Reading, Advanced English Listening and Speaking, English for International Academic Communication, Medical English Writing, and Japanese. Attention has also been paid to extracurricular English activities, an extension of traditional classroom teaching.

During the past few years, the faculty members have published a number of papers and textbooks, ranging in content from translation studies to applied linguistics.

The Department of Foreign Languages for Graduate Students will benefit greatly from and contribute fully to the development of Nanjing Medical University and continue to participate in the growth of the graduate students.
