Newly founded in 2006, the College of International Studies of Nanjing Medical University has, however, a long history, which can be traced back to the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section in 1934, when Nanjing Medical University was officially established. For over half a century, the teachers of foreign languages of the old generation had made great contributions to the foreign language teaching of Nanjing Medical University. In 2001, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section was renamed Department of Foreign Languages, which offered a 4-year English program in 2003, thus marking the beginning of discipline construction in foreign language teaching at Nanjing Medical University. For the past several years, the school leadership has attached great importance to the development of the humanities and social sciences and we have every reason to believe that, with the foundation of the College of International Studies, foreign language teaching in our school will usher in an entirely new stage of development.

The College of International Studies consists of 7 teaching and administrative units: Department of English, College English Department I, College English Department II, Department of Foreign Languages for Graduate Students, Foreign Language Training Center, Research Institute of English and American Culture, and College Administrative Office.

Our college has at present 49 staff members, of whom 8 are senior academic title holders and 15 are intermediate academic title holders. In the past five years, the teachers of our college have published 10 monographs, translations, dictionaries, and textbooks and more than 50 research papers in domestic and foreign academic journals; many of them have also engaged in important research items at various levels as well. In addition, a number of teachers have won outstanding awards at the university and provincial levels.
