Biochemistry and molecular biology, a key discipline in Nanjing Medical University, got the authorization to confer master’s degrees in 1981 and doctoral degrees in 2003 by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, PRC. The Department established Jinagsu Province Key Laboratory of Human Functional Genomics in 2002. Currently the Department has 17 faculty members: 2 professors and doctoral supervisors, 3 associate professors and 8 lecturers.

Our faculty provides all the students of NJMU a rigorous curriculum which consists of biochemistry, molecular biology and related laboratory courses. In addition, we offer advanced courses in a wide range of specialty areas reflecting the research interests of our faculty. In 2002, the Department received the Excellent Teaching Award from the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province. In the past few years, We have edited quite a few textbooks with high quality, such as “Medical Molecular Biology”(Science Press), “Molecular Biology” ( Higher Education Press) and so on.

The scientific research feature of our Department is combination of basic and medical science, and the research focuses on the following fields: 1) the growth and development of pancreatic β cells and regulation; 2) the mechanism underlying diabetic mellitus. The Department has fixed assets totaling 5 million yuan, which satisfies the teaching and research requirement. From 2004 to present, our faculty has got 10 research projects supported by national, provincial and ministerial foundations or other sources. And 55 research papers have been published in international and national journals, 13 of which are SCI papers. Our Department is actively involved in communication and collaboration with overseas universities and an excellent international cooperation relationship is established with the following institutes: Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard University, Leslie and Susan Gonda (Goldschmied) Dibetes and Genetics Research Center of City of Hope National Medical Center, Medical School of Virginia University, Biology Center of Würzburg University (Germany), Department of Endocrinology of National Medical Institute (France) and so on.
