The Department of Physiology, Nanjing Medical University, which was among the first to be authorized to confer master’s degrees by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, is a key discipline of Nanjing Medical University. and the chairman member unit of the Physiology Society of Jiangsu Province. It boasts one provincial excellent course Physiology and one national excellent course Medical Functional Laboratory. Science.

At present the Department of Physiology has 16 full-time teachers (5 professors, 2 associate professors, 6 lecturers and 3 assistants) and one adjunct professor. Four of them are PhD supervisors and two master’s supervisors. Seven of the faculty hold a PhD. Four faculty members obtained their PhD or had their post-doctoral training abroad. Six of the faculty hold leadership positions in some academic societies above the provincial level such as the Chinese Physiology Society, the Jiangsu Province Physiology Society and the Jiangsu Province Biomedical Engineering Society. Two teachers are on the editorial board of some domestic academic journals and work as reviewers for some international academic journals. One faculty member is selected as a cross-century academic leader of the “Qinglan“ Project and another one as a third –level candidate of the 333Project.

The Department has the following research areas: cardiovascular physiology, neurophysiology and cellular physiology, conducting research both at the global and cellular molecular levels. In the last five years, the Department has undertaken 25 research projects, 5 of which are funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China. The faculty have published 212 papers, of which 22 are SCI papers and 14 ISTP papers, and authored 11 monographs. The Department has obtained one national patent and won four Science and Technology Progress Awards at both the ministerial and provincial levels. Some of its research has either been applied clinically or developed into new products, achieving great success both financially and socially.

Psychology, a course offered by the Department, was approved as an excellent course of Nanjing Medical University in 2003 and a provincial excellent course in 2004. Another course, Medical Functional Laboratory Science, was approved as a national excellent course in 2005. The Department has won many awards for its teaching achievements. For example, its “Construction of Physiology Textbook Series and Corresponding Computerized Teaching System” has obtained the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award. With its quality courses, the Department enjoys great popularity among the students.
The Department attaches great importance to teaching innovation and interdisciplinary education. It has developed the D95/MD2000 computerized experimental teaching system and the corresponding software. They correspond to the textbooks used nationwide and are used in many medical universities. The Department has also set up a human body functional laboratory and a digital virtual laboratory.
