The Department of Cell Biology and Medical Genetics at Nanjing Medical University, developed from the former Department of Biology, is a relatively new department and its mission is to create favorable conditions and atmosphere for scientific research and to educate our students who are the future doctors and scientists. At present the Department has four faculty members: one professor and three associate professors. Fifteen graduate students are now working here for their doctoral or master¡¯s degrees. The scientists and students undertake fundamental investigations in molecular genetics and cell biology of cancer. Their studies are focused on the molecular mechanisms of BCL2 proto-oncogene regulation, the signal pathways of tumor metastasis, chemotherapy resistance and cancer biomarkers. The Department has been granted five National Natural Science Foundation of China projects since 2002. It also works on projects from some foundations in Jiangsu Province and the University. The faculty have published nine papers in international scientific journals in the past few years.
The Department, emphasizing international communication and cooperation, has established close ties with some laboratories in America and Germany. Two Chinese scientists have come back from America and joined the Department since 2003.
The Department is responsible for lecturing on cell biology and medical genetics to the undergraduate students at the University and holding seminars for graduate students. The faculty have written and published two textbooks entitled¡°Medical Genetics¡± and ¡°Medical Biology¡±.
