The Department of Biotechnology of Nanjing Medical University (NJMU) was founded in April, 2005. At present, the Department has 3 staff members, including 1 professor,1 lecturer,1 assistant technician and a few part-time professors. It offers a Biotechnology Undergraduate program, and started to recruit students in 2005. The undergraduate students are required to complete 4 years of courses, laboratory’s training and field work to receive their Bachelor’s degree.

The Department is responsible for the course “An Introduction to Biomedicine” of the non-clinical medical students and the major courses of its Biotechnology Undergraduate Program students. It attaches great importance to teaching reform. So far, its faculty have published quite a few papers about teaching reform and produced 2 textbooks. The teachers have received 1 Excellent Teaching Award from NJMU.
In recent years, the Department has focused it scientific research on medical molecular genetics and the molecular mechanism of heredity diseases. It has received 7 research grants, and published more than 30 research papers, including 6 SCI papers.

In the years to come, the Department will make full use of the edge NMJU has in biomedicine and pharmaceutical sciences to restructure its laboratories so as to optimize the experiment conditions and facilitate the construction of the biotechnology discipline.
