The Laboratory Center for Basic Medical Sciences was established in May£¬2004.. It was approved as a model center of laboratory teaching of Jiangsu Province in 2005, and a national model center of laboratory teaching in 2006. It has three laboratories: the Functional Laboratory, the Morphological Laboratory and the Human Anatomy Laboratory.
The Center, occupying an area of 8684 square meters and equipped with 1601 pieces of equipment, has assets totaling RMB£¤23,860,000. Its faculty consists of 64 part-time and full-time teachers, and 27 technicians. The Center is responsible for all the laboratory courses of basic medical sciences offered to 13 majors with an annual teaching load of 450, 000 class hours. In last 5 years, the Center has undertaken 10 teaching research projects, authored 6 laboratory teaching textbooks, published 42 teaching papers, and has been honored with 6 awards at both the provincial and ministerial levels for its teaching achievements. It has also undertaken 25 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published 212 research papers, including 59 SCI papers.
The Center, though under the government of both Nanjing Medical University and School of Basic Medical Sciences, operates with its own organization system, personnel establishment and fund allocation. Adopting the ¡°center director responsibility system¡±, the Center is run with unified management of personnel, finance and property, which ensures resource sharing, avoidance of redundant procurement, experiment expense reduction, convenient faculty training and management, and high work efficiency. Its scientifically-based mechanism of ¡°management-quality control-evaluation¡± is a good guarantee of its smooth operation by the principle of human priority, efficiency and economy. The Center has developed a viable administration system, a scientific management mode, and a network and information-based management platform. It has built up a team of full-time and part-time teachers who are competent at theory teaching, experiment teaching and scientific research, and a team of quality technicians.
The Center was among the first to develop an innovative laboratory teaching system of multiple levels and modules which connects with theory courses but stands on its own at the same time. It offers two innovative courses: Functional Laboratory Science and Morphological Laboratory Science, and the former was appraised as a national excellent course in 2005. Its Morphological Laboratory Science and Human Anatomy are provincial excellent courses. The Center has published texts corresponding to the innovative courses. Its Functional Laboratory Science is on the National 11th Five-Year Plan textbook list. Its Morphologic Laboratory Science, published by ?the People's Medical Publishing House£¬is the first textbook for a morphological laboratory course in the country.
Functional Laboratory Science and Morphological Laboratory Science are two integrated courses centering upon the organ system diseases. Their construction was challenging, but the Center has overcome the hardships and developed a complete laboratory teaching system which combines theory with practice, basic science with clinical science, thus deepening the students¡¯ interest and cultivating their ability in analyzing and solving problems. This teaching reform has won the Center the first prize of Excellent Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province.
