The Department of Histology and Embryology in Nanjing Medical University is a key discipline in Jiangsu Province. It can confer master’s degrees and doctor’s degrees. It is a main component of the Key Lab of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu Province and the Key Evaluation Lab of Reproductive Health and Damage co-constructed by the Ministry of Science and Technology P.R. China and Jiangsu Province. Besides, it is the candidate of the State Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine.

Currently the Department has 11 staff members: 8 teachers (2 professors, 2 associate professors, 5 of them hold a Ph. D and 2 are PhD candidates), 3 technicians. Among the professors and associate professors, 2 are Ph.D. supervisors and 1 master’s student? supervisor.

The Department offers the course of Reproductive Medicine to seven-year program medical students, and Histology and Embryology, Reproductive Biology and Developmental Biology to five-year program medical students. The total class hours per academic year reach 3000. It also has two optional courses: Reproductive Medicine for five-year program medical students and Reproductive Biology for postgraduate students. The Department has published several textbooks (for example, Morphological Experiment) and quite a few academic papers. It has been honored for its remarkable achievements in teaching.

The Department of Histology and Embryology focuses its research on reproductive medicine. Its main interest is the functional research of human testis and ovary development related genes and stem cell. In 1997, as the main unit, this department, together with some other institutes, constructed the Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu Province; in 2002, this lab became the Key Evaluation Laboratory of Reproductive Health and Damage co-constructed by the Ministry of Science and Technology P.R. China and Jiangsu Province and the candidate of the State Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine. In 2005, the Discipline of Human Anatomy & Histology and Embryology became a key discipline of Jiangsu Province. The Lab has constructed an experimental platform of morphology, genomics and proteomics.

In the last 5 years, the Department has undertaken 10 national research projects (including three 973 Prgram projects, one national outstanding research grant and one key national project), 4 provincial projects and one international joint project. The average grant each year is about RMB ￥1,500,000. In the recent years, the Department has published 46 SCI articles, and won the first prize of Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of Chinese Medicine Award.
Its affiliated Kangben Medical Testing Center offers service to the public. The Center is advanced in infertility related testing, especially in the molecular diagnosis. The service of this center is very helpful in the diagnosis of infertility. Therefore, it is highly popular with doctors and patients and an important financial contributor to the University.
