The Department of Pathology, established in 2003, has developed from the former Department of Pathology of Nanjing Medical University. The Department was authorized to confer Master’s degrees in 1981 and Doctor’s degrees in 2001. The Department is a provincial key discipline, honored with “Jiangsu Province Excellently-structured Discipline Team” and “Jiangsu Province Education Department Type A Excellent Curriculum”. The Key Laboratory of Antibody Technique of Ministry of Health is also located in the Department.

There are 15 staff members in the Department, including 3 full-time professors, 2 part-time professors, and one associate professor. In recent 5 years, the Department has graduated 40 Master’s degree candidates and 6 Ph.D. candidates. Currently, there are 34 master’s students and 12 Ph.D. students studying in the Department. The Department teaches pathology to all the students in the University. It attaches great importance to curriculum reform and teaching skill improvement. So far it has published more than 30 papers about teaching in journals, and produced ten textbooks, some teaching reference books and 3 CAI coursewares. The faculty have received 2 Excellent Teaching Awards from Jiangsu Province and 5 Excellent Teaching Awards from Nanjing Medical University.

In recent 5 years, the Department has received more than 40 research grants, including 4 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 grants from the 863 Program, and 1 grant from the 973 Program. The grants obtained has totaled RMB￥6 millions. We have published more than 200 papers and 5 scientific monographs, and have received 9 scientific awards at ministerial and provincial levels. The Department is strong in the fields of Molecular Pathology, Tumor Pathology, Anti-pathology Immunity and Vaccine of Schistosomiasis.

The Key Laboratory of Antibody Technique of Ministry of Health was founded in August 2005 with the approval of Ministry of Health of China.

Nowadays, the Department of Pathology takes an active role in international exchange and collaboration. It has joint projects with the laboratories of Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Cambridge in UK, and Van Andel Research Institute in U.S.A. Many professors from internationally prestigious universities are invited every year by the Department to give lectures. Some of them have been appointed Visiting Professors or Adjunct Professors of Nanjign Medical University.
