The Department of Forensic Medicine was established in 2003, on the basis of the former Forensic Medicine Teaching and Research Group set up in Nanjing Medical College in 1950s with as its founders Professor Wang Jizu, Profess Yang Zengyan, and Professor Zhou Xueliang. It has been authorized to start undergraduate, Master’s and PhD programs. Currently the Department has a faculty of one associate professor, two lecturers and three assistants, with Associate Professor Wang Jianwen as the director of the Department.

Teaching
The Department offers a 6-year program which aims to familiarize its students with the essential theories and techniques of clinical, medico-legal medicine and law and qualify them for various positions in? the medico-legal field and the law filed.
Besides the 6-year program started in 2003, the Department also offers refresher courses for forensic doctors all over the country.

Scientific Research
The major research area of the Department is "death time and sudden death". In recent years, the Department has undertaken two projects funded by Jiangsu Province Natural Science Foundation and three projects by the University foundation. In addition, the Department has some joint projects with public security departments.

Social Service
The Department offers forensic medicine service such as postmortem examination, disability determination, and paternity testing. It carries out over 2,000 cases annually, which contributes not only to investigation and trial execution but also to its teaching and research.
