Department of Pathophysiology

The Department of Pathophysiology was established in 1955 and authorized to enroll students for the master¡¯s degrees in 1981. As one of the first such departments in China, it has been long engaged in the cardiovascular disease research, and its expertise is widely recognized. Early in 1988, it was recognized for excellence by the Education Committee of Jiangsu Province, and in 1994 it got promoted to be the provincial key discipline. The Departments also obtained excellent reviews on the tenth and eleventh Five-Year Plans. It was authorized to enroll students for the doctoral degrees in 2000 and to establish the key laboratory of human functional genomics for Jiangsu Province in 2002.

At present, we have a highly qualified staff: 1 distinguished specially-appointed professor, 5 full professors, 2 associate professors, 4Ph.D. supervisors, 3 supervisors of master¡¯s degree programs, 3 lecturers, 1 assistant, 1 engineer and 2 assistant engineers. Eight teachers have a doctoral degree, four a master¡¯s degree.

Now the Department is responsible for teaching the seven-year-program, the five-year-program and the junior college students with a teaching load of 1800 class hours a year. It also pays much attention to improving our postgraduates in professional foundation, related knowledge and research skills. So far the Department has produced 10 PhD degree holders and 50 Master¡¯s degree holders. Currently enrolled are 38 Master¡¯s and PhD candidates. The Department has accepted 12 domestic visiting scholars. Most of our Master¡¯s degree graduates have become the academic leads in their workplace.

The Department focuses its research on the metabolism of lipoprotein, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular pathophysiology, nerve injury and repair, tumors and the mechanism of diabetes. Under the leadership of Professor Qi Chen, the academic lead and director of the Department, its research work is among the best internationally in the following areas: the analysis of gene mutation sites of LDL receptor, oxidized lipoprotein and the scavenger receptor relating to atherosclerosis. In the past five years, the 973 Program and the 863 Program grants have supported much of the Department¡¯s research work. The Department has won 9 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and more than 10 ministerial and provincial projects. We have published more than 50 articles, of which more than 20 are SCI papers. The Department has published 9 textbooks, edited or co-edited 6 monographs, translated 3 research findings into production, organized 6 domestic academic conferences. So far we have received 12 awards at and above the provincial level.
