Department of Microbiology & Immunology consists of two major academic disciplines in the medical field: microbiology and immunology. Pathogenic microbiology lays its emphasis on the characteristics, pathogenicity, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diverse pathogenic microbes. Immunology focuses on the function and regulation of the immune system, demonstrates the pathogenesis of infection, tumor, autoimmune diseases, immune deficiency and transplant, and employs advanced techniques in immunology to diagnose and treat and prevent immune related diseases.
The academic discipline of medical microbiology (including medical immunology) was among the first to receive the official authorization for setting up a master¡¯s program after the Great Cultural Revolution.
In 1998 the discipline of immunology was authorized to start a master¡¯s program when it became a second-level discipline. In 2002, the discipline of immunology was authorized to set up a PhD program. Currently, the Department has four PhD supervisors, among whom Professor Yaokun is the most prominent. So far the three programs have graduated dozens of candidates.
The Department has a faculty of five full professors, one associate professor, eight lecturers, one assistant, and three technicians. Over 30% of the faculty members have been awarded a PhD and over 70% have gained a master¡¯s degree. At present, the Department is doing vigorous research in the following four areas: viral immunology, kidney immunology and signal transduction, immune regulation and autoimmune diseases, molecular virology and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Professor Yaokun leads the research on the viral immunology.
In the past five years, the Department has undertaken nine projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and about a dozen projects funded by the Provincial Natural Science Foundation and the Municipal Natural Science Foundation. About 100 papers have been published by the faculty, dozes of which are included in SCI journals. The research funds from different sources amount to more than RMB£¤3.5 million yuan. The Department has been awarded the second and third prize for eight of its research outcomes by the provincial government and the municipal government.
In the 21st century, the faculty of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology are confident to meet challenges, seize opportunities, and make conspicuous efforts to contribute to the bright future of Nanjing Medical University.
