The Immunological Discipline of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, founded in 2003, is a key discipline of Nanjing Medical University. It has five professors working in a broad range of basic and clinical fields of research. The Discipline is a major player in the research training of undergraduates and graduate students. There are 30 graduate students in the Department who are formally registered in the Microbiology and Immunology program.
Our faculty provides a stimulating environment in which to pursue a graduate or undergraduate research program. Students will have the opportunity to experience the most up to date molecular approaches to the study of problems in microbiology and immunology. The department has excellent facilities and a strong supporting staff to backup the research programs.
Recent developments in immunology, molecular biology and biotechnology have opened many new possibilities in medicine for the application of microbial-based technologies. Thus the opportunities for qualified students will continue to increase in both universities and hospitals. The Discipline has established itself as a leading centre for immunity to virus, immunopathology in kidney, autoimmune disease, and for research into infectious diseases. These research works have been supported by more than twenty key grants from the nation and the province. In the latest five years we have won five scientific awards in research work with one hundred publications, including 20 papers published in SCI journals.
The atmosphere in the Department reflects the success of the individual labs in developing new areas of research. There is excellent rapport between faculty and graduate students and extensive sharing of information and technology between laboratories and students. There are, in addition, many collaborative research projects between groups within the Department and with laboratories in other departments of the affiliated hospitals. The breadth of research opportunities, the distinguished faculty, and the high quality of the graduate program make the Department a stimulating and challenging place in which to carry out studies in Microbiology and Immunology.
In this web site, we attempt to describe briefly the Discipline of Immunology. You will find a calendar of seminars and events, our graduate program description, requirements and application, brief profiles of faculty interests and recent literature citations, graduate student publications, interests and activities, and descriptions of our facilities.
We welcome your cooperation and questions (wangyw@njmu.edu.cn) and look forward to sharing the excitement of immunology with you.
