Discipline of Human Anatomy & Histology and Embryology

The Department of Human Anatomy & Histology and Embryology was established in 1934. With the development of more than 70 years, it has achieved a distinctive growth in teaching, research and student training. It was authorized to confer Master¡¯s degrees in 1981 and Doctor¡¯s degrees in 2003. It conferred the first and the only Doctor¡¯s degree in reproductive medicine in China in 2003. In 2006, it became a Jiangsu Province key discipline and a candidate for the State key discipline. The Discipline has 3 sub-groups and consists of the Department of Anatomy, the Department of Histology & embryology and the Research Center of Neural Biology. Currently it has 21 faculty members, including 9 professors (7 of them are PhD supervisors) and 6 associate professors. 16 of the faculty hold a PhD and 5 have a master¡¯s degree.

Our research areas are reproductive medicine, ¡°skeletal biology & stem cell biology¡± and neural biology. Our Discipline has undertaken different kinds of projects, including 2 NSFC for outstanding young researchers projects, 3 ¡°973¡±Program projects, 12 NSFC projects, and 2 international projects). The total grant is about RMB£¤15,000,000 and the average annual grant is about RMB£¤2,500,000. In the last few years, the faculty has published 78 SCI papers. The Discipline has won the first prize Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize Chinese Medicine Award..
The Discipline offers seven-year program medical students the following courses: Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Reproductive Medicine and Neural Biology. It also offers Histology and Embryology, Reproductive Biology and Morphological Experiment to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Its total class hours reach 9511 per academic year. in the past 4 years, its faculty has produced 25 textbooks and monographs. In 2004 the Discipline published a reproductive medicine textbook. It has won the first prize provincial award for excellent teaching. ?One of its courses, Morphological Experiment, is approved as a provincial excellent course.

Characteristics and Strengths
High level in academic research
With the development of medicine, Human Anatomy & Histology and Embryology now has human genomics, proteomics and stem cell as its research focus in addition to morphology. To keep pace with the development, the faculty have studied the human morphological changes from the transcription and translation level. For example, in the research of reproductive medicine, we identified differentially expressed genes between human adult and fetal testis using the hybridization of microarray and constructed human testis development/spermatogenesis related genes expression profiles. 111 novel related genes were identified and submitted to the GenBank by the Discipline. Besides, we have constructed the human testis, ovary and mouse testis proteomics database according to the general criteria of the world 2-D base. Our Discipline has the first prize Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Progress Award. in the last few years, the ¡°reproductive medicine ¡°group has published 26 SCI papers, including one in The Lancet. The ¡°skeletal biology & stem cell biology¡± group has published 29 SCI papers.

Advanced in basic instruments
In 2003, Nanjing Medical University constructed the new anatomy building that is more than 4000©O. The Key Lab of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu Province, located in the new building, has an experimental area of about 1500©O and possesses the principal instruments for molecular biology and reproductive medicine research (including PCR machine, Flow Cytometry, confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, DNA sequencing instrument and two-dimensional electrophoresis apparatus and MALDI-TOF-TOF). These are very favorable conditions for the future research work by the Discipline.

Balanced development of teaching, research and social service
The Discipline attaches great importance to the integration of teaching, research and social service. Its affiliated ¡°Kangben Medical Testing Center¡± offers infertility related testing service to the public. The center is advanced in the molecular diagnostic field. Its service is highly popular with doctors and patients and its average annual income is RMB£¤700,000.
