The Discipline of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a key Discipline of Nanjing medical University, was one of the first master degree conferring faculties authorized by Academic Degree Commission of the State Council in 1981, and was appointed as the Discipline of PhD training program in 2003. The Discipline emphasizes on the combination with clinical medicine and close cooperation with international advanced laboratories to keep an ascendant position on information and technologies.

There is a faculty of 13 people comprising 2 professors, 3 associate professors and 6 lecturers; 5 members are doctoral degree holders and all the others have master degrees.

The Discipline has established a friendly collaborative relationship with Diabetes Mellitus Research Centre of the City of Hope National Medical Center, and Medical College of Virginia University, US, and with Endocrine Laboratory and Embryogenesis Laboratory of the National Academy of Medicine, France. Meanwhile, it has defined the Etiopathogenesis of Diabetes and the Regulation of Growth and Development of β-cell in Pancreas as leading research subjects in its divers study fields. In last 5 years, the Discipline has undertaken 24 scientific and technological research projects, among which one was accepted as one of the Key National Projects 973 on diabetes, 3 were awarded by National Natural Science Foundations, 1 was the Key Project on Science and Technology supported by the China Ministry of Education, 1 was an international cooperative project enhanced by Discipline of Science and Technology, Jiangsu province, 1 won the Key Bidding Project launched by Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu province, and 1 was awarded Natural Science Fund of Jiangsu province. And all those funds amount to a total number of more than 6 million RMB.

To present, there has been 3 doctors and more than 20 master degree holders graduated from the Discipline. And more than 40 papers were published in international and domestic academic journals, of which 16 were collected by SCI, and the representative ones were included in international authoritative academic journals, such as Diabetologia, Oncogene, etc.

The Discipline of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology takes response for the entire teaching task on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology courses to postgraduates, students of Seven-year learning system and undergraduates, and has chiefly and jointly compiled six text books on medical biochemistry and molecular biology published by the People Public Health Publishing Company, Higher Education Press and the Science Press of China. All those efforts were awarded the Excellent Teaching Works on the education of postgraduates and multimedia teaching methods applying by Discipline of Education of Jiangsu province.

Now the Discipline is on an ascending position on scientific research and teaching works in Nanjing medical University.
