The Discipline of Reproductive Medicine, a key discipline of Jiangsu Province, was established in 2006. Its staff is made up of the researchers and teachers in the Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu Province, the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the People¡¯s Hospital of Jiangsu Province, and the Institute of Human Anatomy & Histology and Embryology. This group focuses on the research of reproductive medicine. Currently it has 18 faculty members, including 5 professors, 3 associated professors, 5 lecturers. Among them, 4 have a Ph. D. and 9 have a master¡¯s degree (including 5 Ph. D candidates).
The faculty are divided into 3 research groups: Reproductive Biology, Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Reproductive Endocrine. Each group, working hard in its own direction, attaches great importance to cooperation among groups. They have constructed an experimental platform of different technologies of molecular biology and proteomics for public use. They offer each other full cooperation in the collection of research samples, publication of scientific articles and application of the research grants.
In terms of basic research, the faculty have studied the controlling mechanism of gametogenesis, discovered more than 100 genitical gland development/ gametogenesis related novel genes, and constructed human testis development/spermatogenesis related gene expression profile, human ovary development/oogenesis related gene expression profile, and novel alternative splices related to testis development/spermatogenesis related gene profile. Besides, they have constructed the human testis, ovary and mouse testis proteomics database. These achievements have laid a solid foundation for further fruitful research.
In clinical research, they have developed diverse methods in Assisted Reproductive Technology. They have achieved a big success in the IVM, PGD and molecular mechanism of PCOS.
In the research of stem cells, the newly appointed Professor Miao Dengshun is very experienced and has published a series of related SCI papers. His further research will focus on this field.
The Discipline has an area of 1500©Ofor experiments and possesses the major instruments for molecular biology and reproductive medicine research (including PCR machine, Flow Cytometry, confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, DNA sequencing instrument and two-dimensional electrophoresis apparatus and MALDI-TOF-TOF). In the last 3 years, the Discipline has undertaken two 973 Program projects, and won 5 NSFC grants and a lot of provincial grants. The average grant each year is about RMB£¤2,000,000. Its faculty are frequent international seminar participants and their contribution is valued by fellow researchers. In the past 5 years, the Discipline has won Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Progress Award (both the first prize and the second prize) and New Medical Technology Introduction Award (both the first prize and the second prize).
The Discipline was authorized to confer a PhD in reproductive medicine in 2003. It offers an optional course ¡°Reproductive Biology¡± to postgraduates and a compulsory course ¡°Reproductive Medicine¡± to seven-year program medical students. Both courses are very popular with the students. The Discipline also gives reproductive medicine related lectures to junior health workers. It published a reproductive medicine textbook in October 2004.
