The Discipline of Pharmacology is one of the most outstanding disciplines of Nanjing Medical University. The Discipline was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 1981, and was approved as Jiangsu Province key discipline in 1993.
The Discipline has a staff of 31, including 7 professors. Ten faculty members have received their doctorate. There are six supervisors of doctoral candidates and two supervisors of master¡¯s students. Ten members of our staff have been bestowed honorary titles above the provincial or ministerial level. Moreover, one professor won National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. One professor enjoys the State Council allowance. Some of them are either deputy editors-in-chief or on the editorial board of some academic journals home and abroad. The research team of the Neuropharmacology Laboratory was selected as a candidate for Jiangsu Province Innovative Research Group Program in 2006.
The Discipline has the following five research areas: neuropsychopharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, tumor pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and molecular pharmacology. The Discipline, in the past five years, has won more than 30 research projects at the provincial, ministerial and national levels, among which there are 12 National Natural Science Foundation projects. Research and construction funds obtained amount to RMB£¤20 million. More than 200 SCI papers have been published by the faculty members. The Discipline has won 7 Science and Technology Progress Awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, and possess several patents.
In order to develop itself into a first-class discipline in the years to come, the Discipline is going to create more favorable conditions for teaching and scientific research. We are open-minded and actively seeking the opportunity to cooperate with national and international researchers so as to synergistically achieve the integrated breakthrough in the future. The Discipline emphasizes the development of faculty structure and the postgraduate education. More than ten of its graduate students have been selected for co-cultivation in internationally prestigious laboratories. Two of them have been bestowed Servier Young Investigator Research Award. Six postgraduate students have won the Jiangsu Province Excellent Thesis Award, and one doctoral student the National Best Dissertation of the Year. In the past five years, 8 young faculty members have been to America, Sweden and Singapore for their PhD and postdoctoral research. Two of them have won projects funded by NIH and the Stroke and Heart Society of Canada.
The Discipline is in charge of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology courses for the undergraduate, postgraduate students of various specialties, and offers programs leading to Bachelor¡¯s, Master¡¯s and Doctor¡¯s degrees. The Discipline has produced several Pharmacology textbooks as editor or co-editor, and has also participated in the composition of many reference books which are widely used in the medical universities or colleges.
